From the words ashi meaning foot, and atsu meaning pressure, ashiatsu is based on the Swedish technique. Swedish massage is considered the foundation for most table massage techniques. It is characterized by the use of lotion or oil to allow gliding strokes over the skin. Most strokes are done toward the patient's heart with the goal of improving blood and lymphatic circulation. Swedish technique consists of five basic strokes: effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotement (percussion), and vibration, though all of these strokes are not used on every part of the body. Our therapists blend in various techniques, depending upon training and experience, to address the specific needs of the client. In general, it is the manipulation of the body's soft tissue (i.e. the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) using the hands in a gentle, flowing massage technique. Varying degrees of pressure and stretching movements are incorporated. It is most commonly used for relaxation and improving well-being.

A typical full-body massage session lasts for 60 to 90 minutes, many therapists will offer shorter sessions for treating specific areas such as the back, shoulders, neck or any area experiencing discomfort or pain. On the first visit clients are asked a number of questions concerning general well-being, injuries and pre-existing medical conditions that the therapist should know about, in order to determine if there are any contra-indications (physical conditions that would prohibit or limit massage therapy).

Cranial Sacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological system called the cranial sacral system. This system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It is based on the theories of William Sutherland, D.O. an osteopath from the early 1900s. Sutherland's theory is that minor movements of the plate-like bones of the skull and postural distortions of the spine create significant pressure on the fluid system that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. The cranial sacral system is responsible for bathing the brain and spinal with oxygen and nutrients from the bloodstream as well as providing a shock adsorption of these systems. It is believed that inappropriate pressures in this system inhibit healthy function. Therapists trained in cranial work apply gentle pressures to the head and spine to effect restrictions that may compromise the healthy circulation of this system.

Myo-fascial Release is an effective hands-on technique that uses sustained pressure to reduce restrictions in the connective tissue system. This method is effectively used to eliminate pain, restore motion and change shape and structure of sot tissue. The theory of Myo-fascial Release requires an understanding of the fascial system (or connective tissue). The fascia is a specialized system of the body tissue that creates shape and structure of soft tissue. Fascia is the packaging system of the body that surrounds and interweaves every muscle, bone, nerve, artery and vein as well as all of our internal organs including the heart, lungs, brain and spinal cord. The most interesting aspect of the fascial system is that it is not just a system of separate coverings. It is actually one structure that exists from head to foot without interruption. In this way you can begin to see that each part of the entire body is connected to every other part by the fascia, like the yarn in a sweater.

In a normal healthy state, fascia has a flexible, elastic configuration. It has the ability to stretch and move without restriction. When we experience physical trauma, scarring, or inflammation, fascia loses its pliability. It becomes tight, restricted and a source of tension to the rest of the body. Traumas, such as a fall, whiplash, surgery or just habitual poor posture over time and repetitive stress injuries have cumulative effects on the fascial system. Tight or restrictive fascia can exert excessive pressure, producing pain or restriction of motion. This may affect flexibility and stability, and is a determining factor in our ability to withstand stress and strain. There are many flavors of Myo-fascial release work that you may come across in your exploration of body work. Without going into further detail some names you may have heard of are Myo-fascial Release, Rolfing, Hellerwork, and aspects of Neuromuscular Therapy.

Deep Tissue Massage is really a misnomer in the field of massage therapy. There are numerous types and styles of massage therapy that would fall into the "deep tissue" category. Deep Tissue massage is typically Swedish based massage therapy. It may include elements of Sports massage, Myo-Fascial Release, Shiatsu, Myo-Therapy, Trigger Point Therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy or other styles too numerous to name here. In general terms deep tissue is a generalized classification of many different types of work that all have one thing in common... depth of pressure. Almost all deep tissue forms of massage therapy have a specific treatment goal in mind. These goals may range from something as simple as reducing soreness to stopping migraine headaches.

Pre & Post Natal Massage
Massage during pregnancy is therapeutic bodywork which focuses on the special needs of the mother-to-be as her body goes through the dramatic changes of the childbirth experience. It is a fast-growing field in the United States that has attracted the interest of labor and delivery nurses, nurse-midwives, childbirth educators, and obstetricians. Massage therapy enhances the function of muscles and joints, improves circulation and general body tone, and relieves mental and physical fatigue.

Pregnancy massage can be done in different ways. Pregnant women may lie on their sides to be massaged and after the first 22 weeks of pregnancy, lying flat on your back can cause pressure on deep blood vessels, due to the growing baby, thereby reducing circulation to you and your baby. To avoid this problem, pillows can be used to ensure that you are lying down and looking at the wall rather than the ceiling. Body pillows are especially effective for the side-lying position.

Massage during pregnancy is safe for most mothers. Our massage therapists will want to know if you are having any problems or complications with your pregnancy before you begin. If you are, then our therapists may require approval from your primary health care provider before proceeding with any bodywork. The following are circumstances in which massage should not be performed: heavy discharge (watery or bloody); diabetes; contagious illness; fever; vomiting; unusual pain; pre-eclampsia; high blood pressure; morning sickness; abdominal pain; diarrhea; any malignant condition.

Because of the tremendous physical and hormonal changes that occur in the expectant mother, we do not recommend any massage during the first trimester. This is the time for the mother to get comfortable with being pregnant. Massage can be performed anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on how much time you have and how much discomfort you are experiencing. Once a week during the second trimester is recommended, and twice a week or more during the third trimester can be very beneficial.
